Oil drain plug

What is the reason for the Phillips screw head in the middle of the oil drain bolt. Does it need to be loosened with a Phillips screwdriver prior to opening the bolt manual doesn't say much thanks wanting to drain a bit as it appears that maybe over the top of the fill line

I would think it's to speed up removal and tightening when you if you don't a socket wrench. It also may be that because the plug is steel and the case aluminum, Yamaha wants you tighten it with a screwdriver to avoid stripping the treads. It's a good idea to change the washer.

I do believe the screw holds the magnet in place within the drain plug.

The drain plug torque is 31 ft. lbs. Don't think the screw could torque to that level without the head of the screw stripping out.
